We recently received a message from a WordPress ToolTips Pro Plus user who mentioned having approximately 10,000 tooltip terms on their WordPress tooltips website. They reported experiencing slow loading times on the WordPress glossary page. To assist this WordPress Tooltip plugin user, we conducted a thorough investigation to address and resolve the issue.
At first, we believed that the slow query was a result of SQL statements. However, upon tracking the SQL server using debugging software, we discovered that the SQL performance was not the issue. We then meticulously added debugging statements and thoroughly examined all systems. Finally, we identified the root cause: the WP_trim_excerpt function we were using was connected to the the_content WordPress API. Numerous plugins were also hooked into the the_content WordPress API, including our own WordPress tooltip function. As a result, this function had to wait for many third-party plugin processes to execute. While this might not pose an issue on a tooltip site with a typical number of WordPress tooltips, it created significant latency on websites with a substantial number of WordPress tooltip terms.
To resolve this problem, we completely rewrote our WordPress ToolTip Pro Plus plugin. We now use our proprietary excerpt function, entirely bypassing the the_content WordPress API and any WordPress API altogether. Users have reported that this change has effectively resolved the issue.
